Major construction activities include the development of residential and
commercial/ industrial areas, as well as transportation facilities. The major
pollutant associated with these construction activities is sediment. Additional
impacts are those associated with specific pollutants such as fuel, oil,
paints, glues, pesticides, fertilizers, metals, sanitary and solid wastes, are
also generated by construction activities. The presence of these pollutants is
dependent on site-specific activities and management practices utilized during
and after the construction project. Various factors relating to construction
impacts on the receiving water body include the type and duration of
construction, rainfall distribution and frequency, soil characteristics,
topography, distance to the receiving water body, and the type of management
practices utilized. Proximity to the receiving water body could also greatly
influence the resulting sediment and pollutant loads and the type of control
measures necessary to reduce these pollutants.
